IPRota is an established validation agent who checks and validates all Sunrise applications on behalf of ICM Registry. 

Who can register .XXX domains?

.XXX is a so-called sponsored TLD. This means that only members of the sponsored community, in this case, the .XXX community, can register .XXX domains. The .XXX community consists of people, companies and organizations that

  • provide online sexually-oriented adult entertainment requiring adult consent or intended for other community members (other providers),
  • represent providers of adult entertainment
  • or is the provider of products or services for the above-mentioned providers.

Members of the .XXX community agree that a system of self-identification is beneficial for the community. They have committed themselves to follow the policies of the International Foundation for Online Responsibilty (IFFOR) and best practice regulations.

Who or what is IFFOR?

IFFOR stands for "International Foundation for Online Responsibilty" and refers to a non-profit organization that promotes dealing with sexually-oriented content on the Internet in a responsible manner: http://www.iffor.org/

In order to register .XXX domains, validation by IFFOR is mandatory. After successful validation, you will be assigned an IFFOR-ID with which .XXX domains can be registered.

Why is an IFFOR-ID required?

An IFFOR-ID is required for the registration of .XXX domains that will also resolve and be displayed on the Internet. Without an IFFOR-ID, .XXX domains can only be registered in Sunrise B and General Availability for the purpose of blocking them.

Does the validation by IFFOR cost anything?

No, the IFFOR validation doesn't cost anything.

Are IDNs supported for .XXX?

No, the registration of .XXX Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) is currently not possible.

Are there also .XXX premium domains?

Yes, .XXX premium domains are available. However, the registry reserves the right to auction these if it wishes to do so.

How is the price structure for .XXX domains determined?

.XXX is an incredibly popular TLD with enormous market potential. The price for .XXX domains is set individually by the respective registrars.

Where can I register .XXX domains?

.XXX can be registered through accredited registrars - like InterNetX. Awarded the prize for best Registrar in Germany 2011, InterNetX also offers preregistrations for all launch phases.

How can I block a .XXX domain?

Trademark owners who are not members of the .XXX community can register and in so doing, block their trademark under .XXX. If no IFFOR-ID is provided at registration, the domain is not connected and therefore not available on the Internet, but will point to a site with information about the domain being blocked. The WHOIS entry only contains registry data, and does not include any registrant data. According to the current registry guidelines, there is no restriction with regard to the term of period for blocked domains.

Everyone else has the possibility to block domains under .XXX in General Availability. The domain will not be connected and will not show in the Internet.

Do domain fees also apply for blocked domains?

Defined fees apply for a .XXX domain blocked in General Availability per registration period, regardless of whether the domain is blocked or reserved. You can get more information about the costs from your authorized provider.

How can I manage a blocked domain?

This is not possible. A blocked domain in Sunrise B points to a site with information that is managed by the registry. Only registry details appar in WHOIS.

Can .XXX domains be registered for more than one year?

Yes, .XXX domains can be registered for a maximum of 10 years.

What is meant by the phases Sunrise AT, AD and B?

Sunrise AT stands for "Adult Trademark". Only applicants with a registered trademark and an IFFOR-ID can register .XXX domains

Sunrise AD stands for "Adult Domain". Only applicants with a corresponding domain in another TLD and an IFFOR-ID can apply for .XXX domains.

Sunrise B stands for "Blocked" and allows trademark owners without an IFFOR-ID around the world to register and block .XXX domains.

Is a separate application necessary for every variation of the trademark (e.g. with/without -)?

Yes, if you would like to register a .XXX domain for both variations, you must submit separate applications. Different spellings are treated as individual trademarks. 

How does the Sunrise phase work?

The Sunrise phase is divided into three parts: Sunrise AT, Sunrise AD and Sunrise B.

In Sunrise AT, only trademark owners who are members of the .XXX community may apply to register their trademarks under .XXX. Sunrise AD is for owners of content relevant domains in other TLDs. They must also be members of the .XXX community. Sunrise B offers trademark owners worldwide the possibility to block their trademark under .XXX.

All Sunrise phases run from September 7 to October 28, 2011*. Applications are collected throughout this period and checked. The validation by the registry must be completed within 5 days (120 hours) after the Sunrise phase has ended.

If there are multiple applications in Sunrise AT and AD for the same domain, it goes to auction. Multiple applications in Sunrise B are treated as one application. If there is more than one valid application for the same domain in Sunrise A and B, the domain is allocated to the A applicant. 

Who or what is IPRota?

What documentation is required to support a Sunrise application?

Sunrise applicants must submit certain data to demonstrate their qualification in relation to the right(s) for the domain name applied for. The following data is required:

    •    Registered mark: Exact word or phrase described by the registered mark
    •    Registration number: Registration or serial number of the registered mark’s current registration
    •    Registration country: Location (country / region) where the right is established
         (using the corresponding WIPO Standard ST.3 code)
    •    Applicant status: The applicant holds the trademark as the original owner, licensee or as an assignee

Do I need to consider any special requirements when submitting documents?

All documents should be submitted electronically according to the following specifications:

  • PDF format (maximum size: 1 MB)
  • DIN A4 or standard letter format
  • The content must be easily readable and may not have been altered

In some cases, other formats (originals or certified copies) may be requested by the registry if deemed necessary. 

When will allocated Sunrise domains be connected?

Allocated Sunrise domains will be connected and available on the Internet at the start of General Availability.

How should trademarks be registered?

Please follow the following guidelines when registering trademarks under .XXX:

  • Special characters are not allowed.
  • Image symbols are not permitted.
  • The trademark name may not contain ".XXX".
  • Punctuation marks or other special characters can be omited or replaced by a dash.
  • Special characters may be transcribed by replacement with a dash or omission (e.g. & to  and, + to plus, = to -). 
  • If a dash is part of the trademark name, it must be included in the domain name.
  • Underscores are not allowed.
  • The name must consist of at least 3, but not more than 63 characters (including TLD).

How does the ordering process for Landrush work?

The .XXX domain is registered via the registar as usual. The IFFOR-ID does not have to be specified in the registration process via the registrar in the Landrush phase. This is only required when the application is validated by the registry. In this regard, the registrant is contacted per email by the registry. The validation must be completed within 5 days (120 hours) after the Landrush phase has ended.

In which launch phases may auctions take place?

Auctions may take place during the phases Sunrise AT, AD and Landrush.
Auctions only take place if there is more than one rightfully entitled application that has been validated for the same .XXX domain.

When can domains be registered on a first-come, first-served basis?

The first-come, first-served principle only applies in the final launch phase, General Availability. In the phases Sunrise and Landrush, the .XXX domains are not immediately assigned, but only allocated after each phase has ended and connected at the beginning of General Availabilty.

What is RES?

RES stands for "Registry’s Rapid Evaluation Service". This process has been introduced for the TLD .XXX, in order to be able react quickly to any potential misuse of a .XXX domain. The registry is expected to provide further information about this on September 7, 2011.

What does it mean that the websites are going to be monitored?

Registrants consent to operate according to best business practice, one example of which is: "All registrants in the sTLD must agree to permit automated monitoring of their sites for compliance with IFFOR policies (...)."
